How we respond to crisis
The Florida Crisis Response Team (FCRT) provides trained, trauma-informed support to communities across Florida affected by disaster, tragedy, or violence. Using the NOVA Crisis Response model, we help survivors, caregivers, and responders begin recovery with structure, compassion, and emotional stability.
Our crisis response model
The Florida Crisis Response Team follows the National Organization for Victim Advocacy (NOVA) model of crisis response.
This approach focuses on compassionate, skill-based intervention to help people manage the emotional and psychological impact of trauma while supporting community caregivers in their recovery efforts.
FCRT responds only by community invitation, coordinating with local officials, first responders, and service providers to ensure that appropriate support is provided after an incident.
Each response is guided by principles of safety, respect, collaboration, and care.
What we do
When a community experiences a tragedy or disaster, FCRT deploys trained volunteers to assist survivors and to those providing care. Teams help stabilize emotional reactions, support local responders, and provide information on coping and recovery resources.
FCRT volunteers offer trauma-informed Group Crisis Intervention (GCI) and Individual Companioning for survivors, caregivers, and affected groups.
Group Crisis Intervention sessions provide a safe and structured space for individuals to share their experiences, reduce distress, and reaffirm hope for the future.
The organization provides 40-hour Basic Crisis Response Team (CRT) training based on the NOVA model. Participants learn the fundamentals of crisis intervention, trauma responses, and stress management.
Many FCRT members progress to receive Advanced CRT training.
During large-scale incidents, FCRT assists communities in supporting Family Assistance Centers/Disaster Recovery Centers, helping local services coordinate information, logistics, and support for survivors.
Beyond immediate response, FCRT helps local caregivers plan for long-term recovery—offering consultation, training refreshers, and continued peer support for those serving affected communities.
